From FLICKOFF.org
"The more we all FLICK OFF, the bigger the difference we’ll make. Here’s why: we burn fossil fuels for energy. But that releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases. Those greenhouse gases? Well, they came by their name honestly, and they're heating up our planet. The biggest culprits? Coal for electricity, and oil for fuel."
On August first I want everyone to leave their computers turned off for an entire 24 hours. Unplugging your computer would also be a swell idea, as your computer will still use up energy. We need to cut down on energy use and this is only a small step, but every little bit can help if I can get everyone to join in.
Now I understand that you or your parents may need to use the computer for job purposes or bill paying, but if it can be avoided for that one day, please do it. Just try. That's all I'm asking.
The following information I got from Michael Blue Jay
+ A typical desktop computer uses about 65 to 250 watts of power.
+ It's a myth that it takes more energy to start a computer than to keep it running. It doesn't. You'll always save energy by turning your computer off when you're not using it. If that's inconvenient you can always use the sleep or standby mode. And no, you won't wear your computer out any faster by cycling it once a day, or even a few times a day. Modern computers aren't that fragile. I did hardware troubleshooting at Apple, I know what I'm talking about.
Please, feel free to add any energy saving tips, like what Beeblebrox has done.
I'll try do add links to what anyone has added, as soon as I get them.
Some more ideas from Beeblebrox.
And a link to purchase the handbook The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook: 77 Essential Skills To Stop Climate Change (paperback). Thanks to Beebebrox, again =]
IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THIS BIGGER YOU CAN:
+Put this in a Myspace bulletin.
+Post this on other message boards.
+Ask your family and friends to do this.
There's a lot of things you can do. There's really no limit.
